Employee attendance is important to keep a company running smoothly. Every employee has a particular function within a business and the absence of one person can significantly alter how the company runs. In addition, if someone is out excessively it can create a negative effect on the rest of the company's employees. For this reason, many businesses are extremely strict when it comes to employee attendance and often use timeclock software, timesheet and attendance tracking to constantly monitor their staff.

There are many ways that employers try to enforce employee attendance. One of the best ways is to reward employees for making it to work daily and on time. Some companies offer an additional personal day with payroll payment or even a monetary bonus if their staff members are able to keep a good attendance record. This gives staff members incentive to not be late or make excuses and call out of work. In the long run, this will make it much easier for everyone because no-one is out for any length of time.

Another method to encourage employee attendance is through penalties. For example, if an employee is late or misses work they will receive a point. Points can remain on the employee's record for six months or even up to a year before they can be removed. After the employee collects a certain number of points, it is automatic grounds for termination. Many companies use this system and give employees between five and ten points before they are fired. For example, if an employee takes an additional day off past their allotted personal days this would count as one point against them. You will find that employees will be aware of the points and will try not to accumulate too many because they do not want to be fired.

Sometimes an employee must be out due to illness or medical conditions. In the United States, employees are protected to a degree by the family medical leave act. For example, if a staff member needs maternity leave or must take care of someone that is sick in their family they are entitled to a job in the company when they return. They are not guaranteed their current job or even the same pay scale. While they are protected to a degree, the amount of protection is limited. For this reason, it is important to encourage good employee attendance so that you do not have a large percentage of staff members taking time off of work for medical or family reasons.

When an employee is out often it puts strain on the other staff members. If there is an extended leave or employees have to be terminated then your business is faced with interviewing, hiring and training new personnel. This can be very time consuming, costly and inefficient. For this reason it is important to encourage employee attendance through positive measures instead of the threat of job termination. You can use probation periods with personnel. You can even talk to them and try to work with them to encourage better employee attendance. Employee attendance is very important and so is working with the actual employees.
